Poolhouse Coffee, your new favorite coffee place.
Communication and Design graduate Luke Taylor has combined his love for design and coffee, resulting in a beautiful space amidst the hustle of RMIT and in the heart of the city.
Where did you get the idea for your business?
Opening a coffee bar was the best platform to show case my passion for design and coffee. The two are complimentary, both being fast paced industries that require creativity and are constantly evolving.
How did you get your business started?
It was serendipity! We were looking for the ideal place for the coffee bar. We took our time because we wanted it to feel like the right space. Then by chance I walked by the vacant shop under the Melbourne city baths opposite RMIT with no obvious for lease signage. I knew this was the perfect location when the agent said it was available. That started the ball rolling.
What lessons have you learned so far on your business journey?
Apart from almond milk being very popular! A sound business plan is a must. Also equally important is being able to adapt to customers needs. Work with people who share the same vision but have complimentary skill sets, that way you can leverage individual strengths and are more likely to be successful in achieving the desired outcome.
How important has it been for you to have a mentor?
It's important to have someone to look up to, my mentor fast tracked my business skill development and set me in the right direction.
What are your top 3 tips for starting a business?
Ultimately you should have a vision on how/what/why you will deliver the value of a product or service to the customer.
Start with the end in mind, with what you want to achieve and work backwards from there to set up a plan.
Just have fun, you have to love the work that you do.
Poolhouse coffee is located at 6 Franklin St, Melbourne VIC 3000.
