Where did you get the idea for your business?
My professional background is in architecture. As a practising architect, I saw that being technically skilled is not enough if you want to be successful in your career or business. You also need to speak and present effectively. After all, you may be the most talented designer, programmer or number-cruncher around, but if you can't explain your work or market yourself or work well with others, it will hold you back. I started The C Method to help professionals become more confident and effective at communicating themselves, so they can reach their full potential and achieve the level of success they desire.
How did you get your business started?
I quit my architecture job and spent a year travelling. During this time, I attended business conferences, hung out with professional speakers, and wrangled my way into speaking at universities. I also attracted my first coaching clients. When I arrived back in Australia, I launched The C Method. The first podcast was a great stepping stone into business.
What lessons have you learned so far on your business journey?
I could write a whole book on business lessons! Here's three:
Firstly, for your business idea to be viable, your target market must be:
1) Willing to pay for your product/service; and,
2) Be able to pay for your product/service.
Secondly, just because it's a great opportunity doesn't mean it's the right opportunity.
Finally, if you want to achieve epic things and make a real difference, you must care less about what others think of you. Giving too much of a crap will cripple you.
How important is it to have a business mentor?
Super important. I don't have one mentor, I have many. During my year of travel, I spent time with many successful business owners, all of whom I consider to be mentors. They gave me so much inspiration and motivation with my business. I highly encourage anyone starting a business (or anyone who wants to be successful, really) to surround themselves with positive, supportive successful people. It's as Jim Rohn said: "You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with."

What are your top 3 tips for starting a business?
1. Ask someone who's done it before how they did it and what mistakes they made. Learn from them!
2. Tell people your ideas. You'll never know what opportunities may come out of it.
3. Be prepared for your friends and family not to understand what you're going through. When this happens, don't be afraid to make new friends and join new networks.
